Who
are we?
Kari
Dunn Buron has a Master's Degree in Emotional and Behavioral
Disorders and has been working with students with autism
for over 25 years. She is an Autism Resource Specialist
for ISD #916 in White Bear Lake, Minnesota and the designer
of and coordinator for the Autism Spectrum Disorders Certificate
program at Hamline University in St.Paul (a graduate program
for educators). Kari is one of the founding members of
the MN Autism Network, a statewide network of ASD educational
consultants, and on the professional advisory committee
for the Autism Society of MN. In 1995, Kari developed
and continues to work as the coordinator for Camp Discovery,
a camp for youth with Asperger Syndrome. She has volunteered
as a consultant to the Autistic Society of Trinidad and
Tobago since it began in 1991. In 2003, she received a
self-designed fellowship that allowed her to spend a year
interviewing and working with a number of international
therapists and researchers in the area of Social Cognition
and Autism. She has presented at local, national and international
conferences and is currently co-editing a textbook titled
Educating Learners on the Autism Spectrum: Translating
Theory into Meaningful Practice (due out sometime
in 2006 by the Autism Asperger Publishing Company).
Mitzi
Curtis has worked with people with disabilities and their
families through special education, supported employment
and residential treatment services since 1978. She also
teaches at Hamline University as an adjunct instructor
for the ASD Certificate program. Mitzi has provided a
variety of presentations to school districts and related
organizations. Her work is influenced by her belief that
equitable relationship development between teacher and
student is the cornerstone of meaningful learning. Mitzi
received her BS from Illinois State University; her MA
from the University of MN; and is currently scrambling
to finish her EdD from the University of St. Thomas. Mitzi's
sister Maria, set her on this journey with her birth in
1963.
